Student Life

Being a student is a great opportunity to change the way you live, work and travel and really make a difference. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Individual actions

At the Freshers' Fair you can find out about volunteering, fundraising and campaigning organisations in Bristol, such as RAG, Bristol University Sustainability Team and the Fairtrade Society.

If you are interested in buying locally sourced food, there are plenty of local shops and markets to choose from. The weekly farmers market and monthly slow food market at St Nicholas Market are great places to start.

Education

If you have the opportunity to take Open Units, you could consider taking a unit which allows you to focus on the environment. Have a look at:

* Sustainable Development (taught by staff from Geographical Sciences, History, Economics, Law, Philosophy, Earth Sciences, Engineering and Education)

* Environment Earth (run by Earth Sciences)

* World in Crisis? (run by Geographical Sciences)

* Globalisation and Development (run by Economics)

Public lectures also provide a great opportunity to learn about the issues and develop your own ideas. Find out about public lectures at the University and events held as part of Bristol's Festival of Ideas.

Green Impact Awards

The Green Impact Awards measure and celebrate the steps taken by University departments to reduce their impact on the environment. You can find out whether your school is involved, and even volunteer to be an environmental auditor (training provided, contact green-impact-awards@bris.ac.uk for more information).
