The American University of Paris

Chartered as a liberal arts college in 1962, The American University of Paris is today an urban, independent, international university located at the meeting point of France, Europe, and the world. The University provides an academic learning experience in the heart of Paris that places your personal, intellectual, and professional development at its core.

History

September 6, 1962 saw the arrival of the first students of the American College in Paris, a two-year, junior college located within the American Church in Paris. By 1975, over half of ACP’s students were non-American. In 1978, The American College in Paris became accredited as a four-year, degree granting college. ACP became The American University of Paris in 1988 and has since shaped students.

Education

Imagine a classroom small enough that the professor knows each student’s name, each student’s goals and aspirations, and probably each student’s favorite movie. Imagine a classroom diverse enough that almost every student comes from a different national, cultural, or economic background, is happy to share his or her unique heritage. Imagine a classroom connected enough that research and internship opportunities at some of the world’s newest—and oldest—businesses, laboratories, cultural institutions, and political organizations are right outside your door. Imagine a classroom where almost everyone is away from home but somehow feels completely at home. That classroom is The American University of Paris.

Student services

The Student Leadership Office and Student Development Office have appointed 36 student advisors who will be available throughout the academic year to ensure that incoming students are welcomed into the AUP community. Your student advisor will lead you on a unique selection of social events and activities throughout the week of Orientation, as well as accompanying you throughout the semester to answer questions, direct you to relevant campus services and update you about student activities. Take the time to get to know your student advisor and don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment if you simply want to chat or have any questions.

Housing services

Housing at AUP is a very special experience – that of living in one of the actual neighborhoods of the most beautiful city in the world. Where you live encompasses much more than just where you sleep and shower; it also includes the shops and cafes you frequent, the parks and streets you walk in, the metro and bus stops you use, and the neighbors you get to know. In short, this is the part where you live like a local. Every AUP student lives in a shared apartment, a studio, a private home, or a house and comes to feel that his or her quartier is home.

Library services

The University Library acts as a gateway to information be it on our own shelves, through the Web, or in other Paris libraries. We are committed to helping you take advantage of these resources. An effective use of information resources is essential to your success at the American University of Paris and throughout your life.

ICT services

Our ITS department provides you with the necessary online resources to support you during your studies. The IT services staff also maintain several computer labs as well as the free campus-wide Wi-Fi network. The Multimedia Office can supply you with cameras and other equipment.

Medical services

The AUP student health care plan is mandatory, unless students can provide proof of an alternative coverage plan at the beginning of each semester that meets AUP’s requirements for exemption. There are various AUP student health care plan options depending on student status and age. The most important thing to remember is that all AUP students will be insured while registered at AUP. The AUP student health care plan covers the following and more:

  • eye glasses and contact lenses
  • preventive dental treatment
  • alternative medicine such as chiropractic care
  • doctors who make house calls (SOS Médecins)
  • up to fifteen sessions a semester with a psychologist

Campus life

The American University of Paris is an urban institution centrally located in the seventh arrondissement of Paris, very near the Eiffel Tower and the Seine. Like most urban European colleges and universities, the AUP campus is a composite of its buildings, all located within close walking distance.

Sports facilities

The American University of Paris' Sports Office is all about our student athletes. The skills you acquire on the playing field are applicable to all facets of life and align directly with our mission to educate. AUP sponsors several varsity teams that compete with other university teams throughout Paris. They include:

  • Basketball
  • Cheerleading
  • Equestrian
  • Indoor soccer
  • Volleyball (men’s)
  • Volleyball (women’s)
  • Baytna à vous
  • Creative Writing Club
  • Debate and Politics Club

Student clubs

By joining a club at AUP, you will learn how to function effectively in a team, how to coordinate events, delegate tasks and projects, and improve your communication skills. You may also learn practical skills such as writing, bookkeeping, marketing, layout and graphic design. Below is a list of the current clubs we have here at AUP.

  • AUP Cares
  • AUP Green
  • AUP Music & Performing Club
  • AUP Wine Society

The American University of Paris is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, one of only six regional accreditation associations in the United States. AUP is a non-profit educational institution incorporated in the State of Delaware and licensed by the State Board of Education as a Delaware institution of higher education.
